Alkaline Diet

An alkaline-pH is the basis for good health.

Our pH is the measure of exactly how acidic or alkaline our bodies are. A pH of 0 is completely acidic, and a pH of 14 completely alkaline. A pH of 7 is neutral.

We don’t just have one pH level in our body. The stomach has a pH ranging from 1.35-3.5. It must be acidic to aid digestion. However, blood must always be slightly alkaline, with a pH of 7.35 to 7.45.

An alkaline diet is mostly vegetarian. In addition to fresh vegetables and fruits, it includes foods that have an alkalizing effect on the body such as nuts, seeds, pulses, grains, fats, oils, and more.

Try to keep the acidifying effect foods, such as alcohol, coffee, black tea, fruit juice (sweetened), dried fruit, beef, chicken, eggs, farmed fish, pork, shellfish, cheese, dairy, mushrooms, to a maximum of 20 percent of your diet.

Staying properly hydrated is probably the most important element of the alkaline diet. Not just any water will do! Tap water in most areas is mildly acidic and has traces of pesticides, heavy metals, fluoride, and other chemicals.

According to J Environ Public Health, alkaline diets may result in a number of health benefits:

  1. Increased fruits and vegetables in an alkaline diet improve the K/Na ratio and may benefit bone health,reduce muscle wasting, as well as mitigate chronic diseases such as hypertension and strokes.
  2. The increase in growth hormones resulting from an alkaline diet may improve many outcomes from cardiovascular health to memory and cognition improvement.
  3. An increase in intracellular magnesium, which is required for the function of many enzyme systems, is another added benefit. Available magnesium, which is required to activate vitamin D, would result in numerous added benefits in the vitamin D apocrine/exocrine systems.
  4. Alkalinity may result in added benefit for some chemotherapeutic agents that require a higher pH.

Based on the above, it would be prudent to consider an alkaline diet to reduce morbidity and mortality from chronic diseases plaguing our aging population. The alkaline diet has also been used by alternative medicine practitioners with the supposition that such diets boost low energy levels, treat or prevent cancer, heart disease, as well as other illnesses. These claims are not yet supported by medical evidence.
