In the heart of the empty desert stood a white whale blowing water out of its back”
Therapy pool project at the Israeli version of Burning Man - MIDBURN 2015, by Roni Leef
It all started three months ago, when I was fortunate enough to join an amazing group of people with a shared vision to create a giant whale with a pool in the heart of the desert at MIDBURN 2015.
The project seems almost impossible. Can you imagine yourself creating a heated pool in the middle of nowhere, without water or electricity source?Well, it is possible, here is how we made it happen:
We have created a large compound in the form of a whale with a heated pool in its belly. A chill-out background music played during the day and video art during the night.
- We used a round pool 4.6 meter wide and 80 cm deep.
- Solar water heating panels produce hot water during the day and diesel heating system during the night.
- Back-up electrical system - generator.
- We had to purchase water from the Negev Bedouin (nomadic Arab tribes living in the Negev region in Israel).
In the heart of the empty desert stood a white whale blowing water out of the hole in its back. We videotaped all of this with a special 350 camera attached to its tail.
During the day the whale cooled down everyone who came to its belly and at night it became a vibrant dance floor.
It was a very moving and exciting project for me that I will gladly do again without thinking twice.
Thank you for the opportunity and thank you water!!!About Roni Leef
